"L'intérêt historique des architectes paysagistes pour les terrains d'aviation en tant que sites de projet a récemment été ravivé, à travers différentes pratiques impliquant souvent des stratégies biologiques et écologiques. Le poids économique, les impacts environnementaux et la pertinence culturelle de ces sites, ainsi que leur abandon, offrent de nouveaux territories de nouvelles opportunités d'exploration pour l'architecture paysagère. Les nombreux terrains d'aviation et bases militaires désaffectés permettent aux autorités urbaines et aux designers paysagistes d'expérimenter d'anciennes et nouvelles théories de continuité écologique et de réappropriation du paysage.
Considérer un aéroport comme un paysage est donc une innovation en soi: il faut se l'approprier non comme un simple projet d'ingénierie ou d'architecture, mais comme faisant partie d'un cadre de travail plus cohérent (Waldheim, 2016). Durant es vingt-cinq dernières années, des stratégies gagnantes à échelle mondiale et certains exemples convaincants proposent la transformation des sites d'aéroport en une variété de fonctions - allant de parcs publics à des corridors écologiques, de fermes énergétiques à de nouveaux quartiers urbains. Les terrains d'aviation deviennent ainsi des réserves paysagères en passant de lieux que l'on quitte à des lieux que l'on vit."

In the possible scenario of the abandonment of the Airport of Lugano, the atelier asked to think about the future possibilities that the extended area could have. The idea of a cemetery that could gather the little and fragmented graveyards located in the valleys around Lugano is the backbone of my proposal: a new cemetery for the entire Ticino.
The project is developed and defined between the two natural elements that occur in the area: canal “Vedeggio” and the airstrip, where the realisation of a wall strenghtens the left limit and the entrances to the sacred area. The wall becomes the symbol of the design, by representing the relationship between the living and the dead people: through the act of digging the materiality of the architectural element is shaped to host both the cars of the visitors and the tombs of the dead. Beyond the wall, three different experiences mark out the cemetery: the ritual process, the public crossing and the contemplation path.
The first can be experienced through the three main entrances, that bring visitors to the spaces for the ceremony. Each entrance relates with one of the most followed religions in Switzerland: Christian, Atheism and Muslim. From here, it is possible to easily access the bury zone that develops on the sides of the main buildings. Narrow cuts in the wall frame the public crossing, that permit to people to easily access the area next to the highway that was divided by the canal and the void of the airport area. Finally, the contemplation path develops on the canal side, by creating a walkway with four stops corresponding to contemplation chapels.
